Scientists are claiming that taking psychoactive drugs, like shrooms, can help people in their fight to quite smoking. This is because the intense psychedelic experiences mean they forget withdrawal symptoms.
The main compound found in shrooms called psilocybin was administered to a select number of smokers.
For the study, the researchers interviewed individuals who had previously participated in a study on psilocybin-facilitated smoking cessation.
Nine of the 15 participants had effectively quit smoking after treatment with the magic mushroom-derived compound, while two relapsed and one participant became a social smoker.
Participants also reported benefits besides overcoming nicotine addiction such as heightened levels of aesthetic appreciation, openness to experience and engagement in the community.
Researchers recently revealed shrooms can also improve emotional processing in depressed patients.
