A woman whose heart stopped for 68 minutes while giving birth, woke up from a two week coma thinking she was 13 years old and did not remember her children or fiance.
Shannon Everett, 22, checked into a South Wales hospital to give birth to her second child in good health. In the middle of labor, she turned to her mother and fiance to tell them she loved them before her heart stopped beating. Quick-thinking doctors delivered baby Nico, weighing 6lb 8oz, using forceps. All the while, the other medical professionals battled to save Shannon's life.
After an astonishing 68 minutes, doctors were able to bring Shannon back to life. They warned her family she may not wake up or could suffer severe brain damage. Doctors then put her into a drug induced coma to let her heal from the ordeal.
Two weeks later when Shannon woke up, she was finally able to hold her son. Her family was devastated to discover that she didn't remember Nico or her other child. They also noticed that she had reverted to a child like state.
Her mother said: "She kept calling me "mammy". Then when we asked her where she lived, she gave us the address for a house we haven't lived in since she was 18."
"She had no idea who her fiancé was and didn't believe us when we told her she had two kids. It was like she'd forgotten her whole life and thought she was a teenager again."
After six weeks in the hospital, Shannon was released to her mother, Nicola Everett, to be cared for in her home. Shannon is mostly confined to a wheelchair and her sight was heavily damaged from the ordeal leaving her with little sight.
Nicola said, "We went to the hospital that day in September expecting to come home with a new baby, but it's like we have another child, too, because Shannon needs a lot of care."
Her family is working with her to try to regain some of her memory, but it has been a struggle.
Nicola is determined to work with Shannon to restore her mobility and memory, with their ultimate goal being for her to walk down the aisle when she is better.
Her mother said, "When she was in intensive care, I told Ioan (her fiance) that I wouldn't think any less of him if he left her, but he told me there was no way. He loved her and he knew he wanted to marry her."
